TWENTY-ONE

Ethan

Highway 50

Colorado/Kansas State Line

Day 9

Ethan thought more about Jarrod’s survival plan as they exited Colorado and passed into Kansas. Ethan had known people who’d lived in their campers. Usually, they’d been building a home and lived on site while it was being built. They had electricity and running water—none of that would be available now. Ethan’s parents had a camper. Ethan, Brooke, and the twins camped with them every summer. Usually, they’d go to Robbers Cave State Park in Wilburton, Oklahoma. Every April, they camped at Salt Plains State Park in northwest Oklahoma to dig crystals on the salt flats. Rigging up the camper to the GMC was an option. Heading to one of the seven or so lakes near Tulsa would also be possible, except that’s where everyone else would go. As Ethan had learned from the highly populated areas in Colorado, more people equaled greater risk of danger—including death. He had to think of somewhere less crowded to take his family. Remaining in Tulsa was not an option—Ethan’s mind was already settled on that.

“There’s that smell again,” Brooke said, covering her nose as they neared Garden City, Kansas.

Ethan sped up and passed another large feedlot, expecting to find a roadblock like the one back in Lamar, Colorado. He didn’t.

“I bet it reeks in there,” Brooke said, pointing to the enormous meat-packing plant on their right.

“No doubt. They probably processed five or six thousand cows a day. That’s a lot of rotten beef,” Ethan said.

“What a waste. So many people are likely going hungry right now, and many could die if this thing goes on, and here we have millions of pounds of rotting beef.”

“Maybe the group who took over that feedlot in Lamar had the right idea. Someone has to step in and manage that resource.”

“Yeah, but you and I both know that the ones who step forward in those types of circumstances are usually people with bad intentions. Greed prevails for the most part.”

On most occasions, Ethan would at least attempt to counter Brooke’s pessimistic views with something more positive, but in this instance, he thought she was likely correct.
